Yoga vs Pilates

Yoga vs Pilates
"Stay active, learn to love yourself and remember that no body is perfect."

What's the Difference?

Since starting OnCore Pilates, I get asked this a lot by clients who are deciding which one to choose. They are very similar but the key difference is that Yoga takes on an exploration of spirituality through meditation whereas Pilates focuses on creating an understanding that the mind and body are connected, and how this can help in everyday life to move better. Simply put, think meditation for Yoga and rehabilitation of the mind and body for Pilates.

Every teacher conducts their classes differently. Stress relief and mindfulness is key to my teaching, but that's an approach I incorporate in my classes and doesn't mean that every other Pilates teacher will do the same. Every Teacher and class that you come across will be unique which is ultimately the beauty of it all!

I encourage all my clients to try both forms of exercise if they are unsure and to then make an informed decision. Most importantly, regardless of which discipline you choose to practice, find a Teacher that you can connect with on some level and someone who teaches rather than instructs - there's a fine line so choose wisely.

Lastly, never be shy to ask a Pilates or Yoga Teacher about where they trained. Don't take it for granted that just because someone is running a class, that they are certified to do so. It's not an insult to ask. A two-week or online course is very different to comprehensive training from a reputable provider. After all, you are entrusting someone to work with your body so it's vital that they know what they are doing.

Your Teacher won't have the answers to everything (we are only human) but we learn as much from you as clients as you hopefully do from us.

Stay active, learn to love yourself and remember that no body is perfect.
