The focus of this method, however, is altering behaviour through language. The ultimate goal is to create better habits and behaviours through recoding the way the mind reacts to certain stimuli. The founder of NLP, Dr Richard Bandler, describes the method as “a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour."

Although the practice may sound somewhat daunting and almost like altering the mind completely, this is not the case. The NLP method is essentially a practice that aims to fix communication barriers between the subconscious and the conscious mind. Often we believe that we understand what our subconscious is telling is and even more often, this isn’t the case. NLP aims to create an understand between the conscious and the unconscious mind, allowing the patient to have control over their mind, life and emotional well-being.
